And while the “don’t sacrifice your life’s work for infatuation” moral isn’t incredibly dire or front-and-center, it’s there, which I appreciate. Although it’s still juvenile and requires a lot of suspension of disbelief (neither of which are unexpected) it somehow has some pretty real emotional stakes. Surprisingly, it also has a tighter script than other Rankin Bass productions. The character designs are very memorable, the environments are detailed, and the special effects, while cheesy to the modern eye, were obviously well thought-out by the animators. Jack Frost is actually one of the most visually impressive Animagic specials. Fortunately, I found that I was incorrect on my first rewatch, about eight years later. I was never fond of this special, but only because of what I remembered from my childhood, which was that it was boring and sad, much like The Little Drummer Boy. The first of (hopefully) many reviews on the Rankin Bass specials I’ve never seen/haven’t seen in ages.
